Grindhouse

I was checking some trailers on Apple's Front Row yesterday, and noticed this very interesting thing called Grindhouse.

Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino are back together to present Grindhouse, a movie made out of two Back to Back full feature movies! The premises sure is interesting, and A Grindhouse is apparently a type of cinema very prevalent in 70's America, that traditionally showed two uncensored back to back "exploitation" movies, with anything from sexploitation to gore to blackploitation.

Grindhouse will be a 185 minute showing of Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof". In between the two films there will be fake trailers for movies that don't exist, and they say that both films will feature grainy scratches added on, to make the experience as authentic as possible!

It sure is very intriguing, and watching the trailer makes me think that the ride is gonna be a typical Sin City/Kill Bill witty gorefest, and to be honest I can't wait to see the thing!

Grindhouse is out on the 6th of April in The States, and in June elsewhere. As I'm off to NYC in 2 weeks, I'll be watching it there.

In the meantime, check the trailer here.

... that and the European release of the film will be split into two, with Death Proof hitting various countries through June and Planet Terror returning through July, August and September!!!
OK Tarantino, I'm finally convinced u r gay.

SoB said...

...damn now that is proper GAY

I don't get it, that's like ruining the whole idea of the "grindhouse experience"... splitting it in to 2 films is just gonna make it really crappy. I guess watching them Back to Back is what'll make it unique and perhaps make for the cheesy content... oh well!

SUCKS

and u know what the funny thing is? they claim they r doing so because, unlike America, Europe isn't familiar with Grindhouses!!!!

i've been wanting to watch this since wayy back, like 2 months ago. caught it on wikipedia by accident. i want it. maybe here they are used to grindhouses from all the crappy indian/turkish soft porn films they watch?
we'll have to wait and see.

SoB said...

That really does suck you know, what a lame excuse! Split the film cos .eu wasn't really used to grindhouses. They might as well just not release them.

Am glad you tell me all this, I was at half-minds not to see this in NY, but now I'm definitely going to.

after days (..ok a couple of seconds!)of contemplating what message u were trying to convey via ur last comment i finally managed to solve the mystery.. for some reason the url (UR comment referring to the OTHER comment) doesn't display fully. So, when i copied it into the address bar, it just gave me an error! .. ahh, how efficient u r hyperlinks! anyways, my bad, but SO many blogs and comment sections to keep track of!!

Oh, and.. i think it is much better to be suddenly struck by movie twists, rather than being the wise-ass who's happy he knew about it all the time, not realizing he missed out on the whole point of the movie. moo??

SoB said...

yeah definitely
there is this sickening moment in the film where oldboy is opening the "box" with the album in it, and it suddenly strikes you that OMG!!!! that can't be true!!! what a brilliant act of revenge but SO FUCKING SICK!!

then afterwards you think the film can't get better but it does, cos of that brilliant begging scene. True Cinema Brilliance

INDIA said...

well, aside from the brilliance (totally granted),'Oldboy' generated for me a whole new outlook to movies. It made me realize that there is this whole genre of FUCKED-UP (the good kind) movies, particularly Asian ones... and I must say that it turned out to be the lid of the Pandora box of eccentric movies (again, for me).

A. Damluji said...

Look for a little something called CUBE. now THATS cult/weird-ass moviedom if i ever seen one!

congrats on the Oldboy.. :D truly slapped me in the face.. when India said the trick was WHO SET HIM UP, i thought.. hm.. the sickest thing would be HIM doing it to himself (too many hollywood movies)
never saw THIS coming.
that said, how do u interpret the ending? ;)

my take is that it happened, but he does remember at least part of it.. the grin made me suspicious!

SoB said...

I've seen Cube (awesome), Hypercube (SHIT), and Cube Zero (meh). The original Cube was really good, but then it all fell apart.

The ending hmm, problem is, he has no tongue so he can't speak out so theoretically he'll never tell whether he remembers the truth or not. You could argue that he can write it in a letter, but seeing that he was "treated" and that the "monster" side of him left, and the one that remained is the "innocent" one, that person may not know the truth hence will never write it.

I don't think any of the happenings didn't really happen. It was a sci-fi movie, it was just an excellent tale of a very elaborate revenge. All of the shit happened, and in the end him and his girlfriend stay together, with at least one of them totally oblivious to the truth, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD hopefully he can't remember a thing.

If, on the other hand, the treatment didn't work and he knows everything...... I don't want to think about it :p

INDIAN MAN?

btw, a Chinese friend of mine I was at work with a few hours ago recommended the following:

Volcano High (Korean thingie about teachers with super powers)

and

Morerats (no clue what that is)

INDIA said...

Volcano high is pretty nice, but don't expect it to change ur life. Before I left Baghdad, I found the DVD and bought it just because on the other side, it had the MTV version which had characters dubbed by Snoop Dog and Andre (Outkast), etc.... but I never got to watch that version.... also no clue on 'Morerats'.

I remember watching 'Cube' on Iraqi TV WAY back in the days... all I can remember is thinking 'MY GOD what a cheap way to make a movie, considering that the whole studio was a cubic room with changing colors!

about Oldboy ending... I don't wanna get into that... no NO NOOOOO .... (*running away with hands covering ears and eyes squeezed shut!) NANANANANANAAAAA.....

oh... and if u guys want a good shock, then better watch Takashi Miike's 'Audition'... all I can say is mmmMWAAHAHAHAaaaaAAAA..

(*runs away again*) NANAAANANAANAAA..

SoB said...

A few things
1\ my oldboy post up there should read "WASN'T a Sci Fi" rather than "WAS"

2\ downloading Audition and Wasango (volcano high) as we speak

Read about audition on imdb and I'm scared. Seems like it's gonna be a big shocker. Can't wait. I might watch it tomorrow even, as Saturday is our movie at home night. I've warned K already and she says she's up for the task :)

cube was on mbc2 last month and i missed it.
:((

bout the Oldboy, i meant THE TREATMENT HAPPENED, not the whole movie i swear!
but i still believe he remembers at least part of it.. at least..

found Audition/Odishon, will take me two decades to download.. :(

SoB said...

It's actually MALLRATS, not MORERATS. Some American comedy, am downloading it now too.

Also, Grindhouse is NOT going to be split in these countries

QUOTE:
So far, aside from the US and Canada, the U.K., Spain, France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand will all be getting the film as one double feature.

Taken from here

Saw Audition yesterday. First half is nothing special, second half suddenly becomes this shockingly gruesome act of torture, paranoia, hallucinations, and gore.

Me and Kelly enjoyed it a lot. Gets 6/10 though cos the ending left LOADS of loose ends, and the fact that we're seeing the movie in 2007, where even Hollywood has made gorier/shockier films (eg the excellent SAW movies).

Thanks for the heads up though.

INDIA said...

yeah man, that's what i was talking about .. the slowly-paced and really boring first half followed by the fucked up second one.

and, it's these movies that paved the way for nowadays' Saw-ish (I thought the 2nd was shit, still haven't seen the 3rd)or Hostel-ish ones... and u Know, Takashi Miike was very influential to the genre, that, for example, he did make an appearance in 'Hostel' as a character named "Miike Takashi" :p

SoB said...

Yes there's no denying that Audition is amazingly influential. I mean, you can see it's influences in tons of horror movies these days.

It is really good, and I'm sure the Quentins and Elis of the world regard Takashi as an idol.

If I had seen it in 1999 I think I would have given it a 9, cos at the time it would have been fucking ground-breaking.

Still, good film to watch. Some moments are just (OH MY GOD!!!!). I wish it had ended more clearly though ;)

Abdullah The Small, see it soon please and join the debate.

A. Damluji said...

yes yes certainly!

btw SawII blew ass. it sucked and had me just rooting for the people to get killed. i hate it. first was ok, dunno about third, too bored-out to attempt it..
waiting for Audition to complete.. urgh.

INDIA said...

yeah man, I got, and agree with, ur point from ur initial notion of it... I also had the same regret for the way it ended.

And now to move on with our shock-fest, i point out 'Salo' or even better the 'Guinea Pig' trilogy... well, actually just kidding cuz both r just pointless perverted ultra-gory torture flicks... altho 'Guinea Pig' stirred some controversy when it came out.

oh, and I just finished watching 'The Prestige'.... all i can say is : this film was SOOOOOOO good, it actually hurt when it finished... it really did! If I'd died after it, I wld've gone a satisfied man.

SoB said...

I LOVE THE PRESTIGE!

I really, really do. I saw it last year though so it's not on my movie list. Definitely a 9/10.

As much as you think you've worked it out, and found out who the real baddy is and the Tessla machine and all that, but when the REAL trick is revealed it really is amazing! The Illusionist on the other hand is a pile of steaming crap compared to this.

The Prestige shows you EVERYTHING, all the clues are there, and when you find out the truth you go "aaaahhhhhhh, so that's what that scene was!". The Illusionist has a twist also, which when revealed shows you scenes you didn't even know existed. Sucks.

Now, back to shock gore:

Cannibal Holocaust was meant to be awesome, I have it but not seen it. But even more controversial and gory than that is the excellent Men Behind The Sun. The story of how the japs experimented on the Chinese during the war (they regarded them as animals). It shows you renditions of true stories, eg putting a guy in a pressure chamber until he literally pops.

What makes the movie so unique and controversial is certain scene with a cat. A real cat. I tell you, it upset tons of people and is really difficult to watch. Highly recommended

Oh, and on Asian films in general, not gory though: Battle Royale. I love it :)

INDIA said...

I've had 'Cannibal holocaust' and 'Men behind the sun' for ages, but never really got to seeing them.. altho I saw the 'cat' scene ... FUCKED UP!.. and I did enjoy 'BR'.. to me, it measured up to watching a really weird sport movie :p

I really shld've mentioned this from the first comment.. but 'Survive style +5' is THE SHIZNIT of weird and I personally think it comprises a genre by itself. Unique I tell u... plz c it plzplzplz.... oh, plus it's got Vinnie Jones!
