Goodbye

So, I'm getting married in 2 days time. We're off to The Swan Hotel, for a small, civil (ie no religion crap) wedding.

So I guess it's goodbye singlehood, goodbye blog, goodbye games..... NOT

All that's gonna change is my ring going from right hand to left hand. Otherwise it's business as usual in The Alsawaf house, except they'll be two Alsawafs instead of one :)

Hopefully Kelly Alsawaf will take this as a chance to stop beating me at Mario Kart. One can only hope. I can still look forward to regular TF2 sessions (I hope), and that bastion of co-op play that is L4D. Which reminds me, I hope it's good and I hope we play it.

Of course, it'll soon be time for an "upgrade" and some one calls it ;)

Pictures, more blogging etc come Thursday.

For The Love Of Shells

So we were playing Mario Kart Wii the other night.

After a long and hard 2 laps, we were racing on the 3rd and final lap. Bowser was first, I was second, and Kelly was third.

The finishing line was in viewing distance. Bowser was speeding away in a guaranteed first place, and I was trying to catch up. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Kelly, somehow managing to speed past me to take 2nd place. Damn it. I'm sure she'd used a mushroom or something.
And right behind Kelly was a Red Shell . No doubt sent her way by one of the AI racers behind us. As she was zooming past me, I saw the Shell home in on her and BANG! she was toppled! I looked to my REAL right (where she was sat) and saw that look of OH-MY-GOD-I-CAN'T-BELIEVE-THAT-JUST-HAPPENED-AND-DON'T-YOU-DARE-LAUGH-OR-MENTION-IT-EVER. I was sensible enough to understand the look (I've seen it before, see, when we used to play Mario Kart on the DS. It's scary) so I just glanced back at the screen.

And there it was. There was my saviour, zooming right above my head, in all it's blue and white winged glory. There was the Blue Shell flying above us all with one target in mind - the number one racer. Poor old Bowser, he must have been INCHES away from crossing the line and getting pole position, and then KABOOOM!!! And up he flew in the air, tumbling and tumbling.

As he fell down, he would have seen me, playing as the all-encompassing Mario, wooshing underneath his kart and getting that pole position, fair and square. Or should I saw fair and round, just like the Shells.

The beauty of Mario Kart is just that. You can spend all 3 laps in number one, be hit by one Blue Shell and finish 10th. It is horribly unfair, induces swearing fits, and is more of a cause of marital disturbance than any other. Which is what makes it the addictive one-more-go game that it is. Brilliant.

Left4Dead Information Avalanche!!

Left4Dead411 has got tons and tons of links for new stuff for one of my most anticipated games of the year!

There are 7 minute gameplay videos, interviews, details of a new "deathmatch" mode, and tons more stuff.

All we need now is a damn release date..

Lego Indiana Jones demo out!

For the uninitiated, a few years ago Traveller's Tales released Lego Star Wars, which was a great and funny platformer set in the Star Wars universe, with everything made out of Lego!

The games did so well that they announced both Lego Batman and Lego Indiana Jones. The demo for the last one is out now, where you get to play the legendary lost temple sequence from Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

As always, co-op play is available, and the usual humour that was in Star Wars is back, including a poke at C3PO :D

The full game is out June. Grab the 464mb demo here.

Doom 4 announced!!

Yes, yes!
id today have confirmed Doom 4 is being developed.

Now I remember back in 2000, June to be exact. I had just left Baghdad, and was waiting for my passport in Amman. I spent most my time in a friend's internet café, discovering what I had been missing for years.

Anyway, back then we used to chat on ICQ. Nile Warp logged in to tell me that id had just announced on Telefragged that Doom 3 was in developement!! Man what a moment. And we all know how long it took them to get that one out, which, with it's expansion, are 2 great games (I thought - loved the engine and corridor-ness of it all).

So, I wonder if Doom 4 will come out 2012. It'll be the official game of the olympics :p

Then again, judging by how quick Quake 4 was announced then released, it may well be sometime next year if we're lucky. Fingers X-ed.

C&VG have more details here.

Lost Cities

You've got to blame the 360 for this. Specifically it's Arcade service. Small games that are budget priced, available to download and there's new ones every Wednesday. Some are awesome remakes (Rez HD, Sensible Soccer, Prince of Persia), and some are originals. It was Microsoft's idea of a service for Daddy, when his kids aren't shooting 'hos down in GTA, he can play his Hexic and his Frogger.

Unsurprisingly the service has taken off hugely, and has proven to be a major source of sales and distribution on the network. It has been imitated by the other manufacturers, and even the PC has it's own versions with Steam and Gametap and others. Still, the 360 remains the original, and to date the best experience IMHO.

Which takes me on to Lost Cities. This beauty was released last week. It's an Arcade creation of a popular (or so I'm told) card game of the same name. As always with Arcade releases, a limited demo comes out for free along with the full release. I downloaded the demo to see what the game was all about. 2 hours later and I'd bought the full version, having never even heard of the game in real life before!

Lost Cities is a 2 player only card game. The deck consists of 5 colours, each colour has 12 cards: the numbers 2 to 10, and 3 "investment" cards. There is also a board that isn't really needed, which has 5 "cities" on it, each one a different colour in tandem with the cards.

The purpose of the game is simple: you have to play your cards on the same-coloured city in order of small to large, and end up with the most points.
Each turn you can either:
a\ Play a card on a city.
b\ discard a card you don't want/need
Either way, you have to then draw a card, either from the deck, or from the cards discarded earlier.

To play a card, you have to put it on the same coloured city, and it has to be larger than the card you're putting it on. So if you have a 4 on a city, you can't put a 2 or 3 on top of it.
Investment cards can only be played if they are the first cards on a city. If you've already started playing on a city with a number card, you can't put an investment card on it at all. Therefore, investment cards have to be used early on and wisely.

And that's about it. The game finishes when the deck runs out.

Now all this sounds boring and stupid. And definitely not fun. It would have been all those and more were it not for the ingenious scoring system. Before I go in to that, it's worth mentioning that in the game's terminology, when you play any card on a city for the first time, it's called an "expedition", I guess in keeping with the Lost Cities theme.

Back to scoring: The game scores you as follows:
1\ Start of Expedition: -20 points
2\ Number cards 2-10: face value
3\ Investment card: x2 of total city score.

Simple? yes. Clever? definitely. To start an expedition costs you -20 points, hence say you want to start a green city, you had better make sure that you've at least got 20 points worth of number cards to just break even. Of course, your opponent is going to see your play and will make sure he or she doesn't discard any green cards for you to pick up!

An investment card is a great risk: it doubles all the score of the city, INCLUDING THE NEGATIVE SCORE!! As I mentioned earlier, you have to invest in a city from the very beginning. So if you start an expedition with an investment card, you're already -20x2 (-40) points down!! Investment cards can accumulate, so if you're feeling daring and brave you can put all 3 of them together, giving you a total city multiplier of x4, hence you'll have a deficit of 80 from the start!
Of course any number cards played after that are multiplied by the same factor, so an investment is worth it if you play enough cards to fill the deficit and make some points.

Again your opponent is watching all this, and when you see someone playing an investment card, you make damn sure that any cards in your hand of the same colour stay there, so as to minimise their profits!

As you see scoring is very simple, as is the game itself. It is very easy to understand the game, as those are the only rules needed. But the complexity in it is amazing! Do you start an expedition and lose 20 points? Do you discard a card that you know your opponent might need and use? And do you play an investment in the hope that you'll draw some big numbers to fill the deficit with?
These are all questions that you'll have to answer in a typical game session, and a single wrong move can cost the match!

Games don't last long which is another great factor. Board games traditionally take ages, remember Monopoly and Risk? But Lost Cities finishes a lot quicker because the deck of cards isn't too big, and the game finishes when the deck is empty. A nice tactic I learnt the other day is you can semi-control the flow of the game by drawing cards from the discard pile, rather than the deck itself. As the game doesn't finish till the deck is empty, you can slow the game down by not drawing from the deck. This can be used for great advantage, especially when you're rushing to play the big cards you've been holding on to all game long!

It really is a great, simple game. It's very easy to grasp, difficult to master (cliche I know, but true!). The 360 version also features online play which is great, there's always some one willing to play you're geeky little game with you!

If you own a 360 you'd do much worse not getting this little gem. If you're that inspired you can buy the proper game (the cards are apparently big and beautiful in real life!), or you can check the link above for further links to online versions of the game.

And finally, I found out today that the awesome dude that's on the Monopoly cards and box (fat guy with moustache) was officially known as Rich Uncle Pennybags up until 1998, when Hasbro renamed him as the rather boring Mr Monopoly ;)

Email from Valve

Hi.
Yesterday, we reset your Medic achievements because we mistakenly believed you had hacked around the system to get them. Today we discovered a bug in our code that resulted in you being incorrectly flagged as cheating. As a result, I'm emailing you to apologize for our error, and to let you know that we've decided to award you the full set of Medic achievements.
Have fun with the Ubersaw, Robin Walker.

How awesome is that! Today I briefly logged in to TF2 with Blue Blood and found out that most of my achievements had reset. Turns out quite a few people's had, so I didn't think much of it!

Time to try out that ubersaw me thinks ;)

Last night

shift (shit?) tonight.

Well, last of 4, then a week off for the 2nd round of 3. Bastards.

Been playing Jericho before the shifts start. Nothing phenomenal, a generic shooter. Fun for nights nontheless, and has ok GFX.

That's it.

Sometimes...

... I wonder if people change. I mean, just suddenly become someone else. Perhaps that'll explain why sometimes people suddenly become different?

May be they have too much on their mind, but just don't want to talk about it? Or may be I've changed or done something wrong and they still haven't told me. I don't know but I sure would like to.

Sometimes I think that it's all because I'm trying too hard; people could be busy, or have moved on, or even grown up, and I'm still stuck in my childish past. A past where things were simple, where friends were frank with each other and innocent. Could it be that the burden of life, family, or even money that's in people's minds, and the little time they have free they want to spend alone?

I miss the days when we spoke to each other, the days when we had fun, and the days when everyone was more patient.

If I was the one that has done something wrong then I'm sorry, if I have changed then please help me change back. I'll be waiting, hoping that one day we'll all get back together.

I miss my old friends.

The Atari ST "busy" icon

Was an awesome black and white bee, that I used to love on my old STFM. It was my first "real" computer, after the awesomeness that was the ZX Spectrum.

So, today I decided to remake it from Pixelblocks. Took me some time but I love the result. Problem is, don't know where to put it :)

So we figured it out

Me and Anmar, late tonight (this morning?) figured out how to fix TF2. Disable Quad SLI. Disabling Quad SLI made the game work PERFECTLY. No crashes, no C++ shit, and no chokes very few seconds!
With SLI disabled, the game still runs great at 2560x1600 with all bells and whistles, so it's not a big loss. What it is though is a big pain in the bum, as disabling or enabling SLI has to be done on the nVidia control panel and can take up to 30 seconds each time. Oh well, at least there's a way to play the game, I was getting mighty annoyed at the upgrade fucking up my favourite tipple.

Blog Change

Have removed the "PC Specs" sidebar panel. Not sure why I even put it there in the first place.

On that note, new PC is functioning fine on x64. In fact, x86 Vista just couldn't figure out that I had 4gb RAM (yes, even after SP1) so it was using the page files like mad, making the system slow.

Benchmarks I haven't done, and most likely won't. They just make your dick feel bigger.

But in terms or real life gaming, the benefit has been HUGE. ET:QW and COD4 now run at 2560x1600 + maxed out at a comfy 60fps vsync, and I have been playing a bit of Crysis; 2560x1600 medium settings, or 1280x800 on Very High. The second one was just to see what Very High looked like. It works fine like this, but looks crap cos the res is low and not native. 2560 medium is amazing anyhow, and I'm actually enjoying it...

Unreal Tournament 3 and Jericho (ie Unreal 3 engine games) have maxed out too, making them smooth as silk.

Team Fortress 2 is still problematic. When it works, it works fine maxed out etc, but it either crashes out (dreaded c++ runtime error), or chokes every now and then, pausing for a split second. The chokes are allegedly a common problem with the new nVidia drivers, so am waiting that gets fixed. There is a fix for the c++ crash for XP, but not for Vista. Can't be bothered to research it more now, have just been playing until randomly booted out.

Finally, Minesweeper has benefited from the upgrade too. Now, the mines sweep themselves automatically, hence all you have to do is just click on the first square and everything solves itself. Amazing.

Email from Razer

Hi Ali Alsawaf,

Thanks again, for signing up to download our Razer Gaming guide.

In approximately 24 hours time, we'll be launching an exclusive piece of news only to readers of this list(those who have downloaded the Razer Gaming Guide).. and what can we say, we're truly excited about sharing the launch details with you, but I'm afraid that the *VERY BEST* we can do right now is to give you a primer on what's to come!

This launch will likely go down in history as one of the *LARGEST* and craziest(and perhaps most fun) things that we ever did in our Razer labs, and we hope you will join us in making this happen!

Some Razer fans have already realized what's about to happen and have already jumped the gun, but unfortunately we will still have to keep it a secret till 24 hours later.

Some clues...

It's 8 letters, blue and very likely, a world record.

Be part of this!

More news to come in 24 hours!

Best regards
Ryan C

Any ideas?

Source vs nVidia Network Manager

Turns out nVidia Network Manager (whatever it was used for) was behind all the issues TF2 and other source games had (ie unplayable). Uninstalled it, and now they all work fine, and stupidly fast as expected.

All that's left now is installing all the crap that usually lies around the desktop, and fine-tuning my mouse settings. The Destructor mouse pad really is smooth and fast, so my old settings are a bit OTT.

Later.

Day 2

(Final update 20:58)

12:00 - Thanks to an email from Blue Blood, my BIOS is up to date now. Still no difference though, EPP still reports the RAM at 1333mhz. I've manually set them to 2000mhz and 1.9v, and taken 2 sticks out (leaving only 2gb in). That has kinda done the trick, but VISTA still reports only 1.7gb RAM (was reporting that even with 4gb installed).

Gonna install 64bit OS to see.

14:02 - Have decided to close everything up and make everything look like normal. Cleared all the boxes (kept them for future moves) and am now installing Vista 64bit. I think this is gonna be a stupid move (even more stupid than the whole project :p) but let's see.
BTW - COD4 worked and by God was it fast. Averaging 120fps at all times. Will benchmark things more properly once everything is set up.

14:33 - Vista 64bit installed. From the go it's read 4gb RAM. Not sure why 32bit was messing about, perhaps cos I hadn't installed SP1 (I thought I had). Now downloading nforce/geforce/sblaster drivers.

15:40 - Vista updating. Drivers installing. Reading Goblet Of Fire

17:30 - still using 64bit, one main difference is that the nForce control panel can now read all the data from the mobo, including EPP and stuff. Not sure why it didn't manage it on 32bit. Things seem to be OK 64bit, despite my hatred of the thing.
SP1 for 64bit needs to install now, and I'm also reinstalling Jericho, COD4, and TF2. Will install Crysis and update it to 1.2 also, just for laughs.

20:58 - been doing other things, left the PC all alone. Will spend the evening doing other things, leaving PC alone for tonight.

00:52 - OK I lied. Just nipped back and for the last hour been testing stuff: EVERYTHING I run (not Crysis though, don't be daft) works at 2560x1600 with at least 4xAA at 60FPS vsync'd. No noticeable dips at all. I vsync all the time, so to me 60fps is what I need, who cares if it can do 600, as long as it stays 60, I'm happy.
Problem though: Team Fortress 2 doesn't work :( Will download other source games over night to see if that's the problem.

Here We Go!

Blog in Progress - Keep Refreshing for updates.

11:20 - OK, gonna have breakfast now. Main PC is on the floor, still assembled. All the new stuff is sitting around still boxed.

12:05 - Old stuff all disembowled from the case. TONS of dust, I'm scratched all over again.

12:30 - Unpacking. PX9650 processor. The box was HUGE, no wonder why, damn intel are copying the old Zalman Flower design ;)

This 1500w ToughPower is HUGE! Compare it to the "small" 700W.

Because of the HUGE ToughPower, gonna have to remove the case's top USB/Firewire ports. Not used much anyway, since the monitor has it's own USB hub.

13:05 - The best thing about this new stuff is the beautiful RAM. These things are works of art, with their awesome yellowness and form factor. I couldn't resist taking the EOS out and snapping a proper picture of them :) Can't wait to install Lightroom in the new PC and edit this picture properly. Let's start installing.

14:45 - Major fitting issues. Damn these geforces are huge. Am wondering if I should've bought a Full Tower Armor.

15:35 - Mobo + most drives are in. Trying to connect modules to PSU. My hands are too sore to take pictures.

16:14 - I think everything is in there. Try to spot the soundblaster! The RaptorX literally squeezed in on display there.

16:42 - Ok the thing turns on, everything seems to be on too (judging by the noise, the GeForces are definitely on!). Not sure how to set the RAM to 2000mhz. Setting EPP2.0 on and auto still gives me 1333mhz

16:50 - Installing Vista Ultimate. Here we go. I'll try to read around regarding memory frequency settings.

17:25 - Am typing this from Vista!! Still running at 320x200 I think LOL. Time to update BIOS and drivers. Still not any wiser regarding FSB and DDR

17:43 - nForce and GeForce drivers installed. The system has suddenly become VERY QUIET! where as before the drivers it sounded like an aeroplane taking off, now it's just a nice, well-behaved, computer.

18:12 - Admittedly, I really like the nForce control panel. It lets me do something that sounds really cool, though might be useless: combine the two ethernet cards on the mobo, to "team up" for better bandwidth. WTF?
SLI is enabled now, and soundblaster drivers installed. Need to update windows then it's on to benchmarking time!

18:19 - Turns out SLI wasn't enabled. It's on now. Fingers crossed!

19:10 - updating. Dinner + swimming pool time. BBL

21:10 - vista updating everything now. I need to find where to download BIOS updates from. Tried COD4, it crashed (well, first crash of the evening).

22:20 - Quick 3dmark06 benchmark: used the free version, so can't change any settings. No overclocking and DDR still at 1333mhz only. Score = 15020

23:20 - Vista, as usual, is grinding away at the hard drives like there's no tomorrow. This does eventually settle, after a few days. A quick test on Quake Wars at 2560x1600xall high was awesome, average FPS 40-60. BUT I don't care about AF/AA so will test tomorrow with them off. Jericho on the other hand, looks FUCKING AWESOME! again 2560x1600xhigh, it ran at 80-120fps and the motion blur just rocked!

Time to stop this madness tonight. XFX site is down so no bios update yet, tomorrow I'll try to figure out the DDR3 2000mhz thing and install some more games to play around with. NN.

Mouse Pad

is here, finally!

And I am LOVING IT! I thought it was going to be made of metal like the eXactMat before it, but thank God it isn't (Metal pads are great but you really have to keep em clean - one spec of dust can fuck it all up!)

I don't know what it's made off, but it is amazingly great with the Lachesis!!

Oh, and as cheesy as this sounds, it comes with a carry case LOL. A hard one, just in case you wanna take your mouse away with you. Stupid, yes.

Still, great pad!

All aboard!

Just got text from KG- processor has been received, so all components are there now!!

Shame I'm working all day today. Tomorrow we're going out for dinner so Saturday I'll start assembling.

See you then :)

Quick one

all things are here, except the processor (stupid courier crap as always).

Should be here tomorrow. Destructor mousepad that was meant to come from Germany has been cancelled (again, stupid couriers!) but I've ordered from a local e-shop, so should be here Friday. I hope.

If I'm lucky, system assembly starts Saturday. Stay tuned.

Test iPhone email to blog post

If I'm doing this right, this email should be published on the blog on-the-fly.

In case you're wondering, this is me just before the Jarre concert, obviously way too excited.

Monday, March 31, 2008

Sneak peak...

... the following should be delivered Tuesday/Wednesday:

XFX 790i nFORCE mobo
2 XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 VGA cards (for SLI)
Intel Quad Core Extreme QX9650 CPU
Thermaltake Toughpower 1500W
Zalman CPU Cooler (forgot which one, NT something)
Crucial Ballistix ddr3 9-9-9-28 2000mhz Epp 2.0 4x1gb (these babies are awesome!)

Gonna try and fit all this crap in the armor junior case. Will mean that the Raptor X won't be on display anymore, but that'll free me up some 5.25 bays for lots of other things.

Might need an IDE2SATA convertor (there's no way I'm abandoning my Pioneer 111D burner), not sure if the mobo has IDE or not...

More soon.

The "intimate" concert

Yesterday we saw Jarre live at The Royal Albert Hall, performing Oxygene in Concert.
The concert was not a typical Jarre affair, it was indoors, seated, and the stage had nothing on it other than lighting and a plain screen behind Jarre and his fellow musicians. Anyone who's seen a typical Jarre concert (see Paris La Defense 1990 for a great idea) will know that the man specialises in HUGE shows, with lights, lasers, fireworks, and big computer projections that cover sky-scrapers.

But of course this wasn't what he had planned for Oxygene. The album is now 30 years old, so to celebrate it's success and the fact that it's core theme is now very important (environmental issues), Jarre is touring Europe performing the whole album entirely live using the exact same equipment he used 30 years ago.

This is a huge challenge and a very brave step, the equipment is old, fussy, and analogue. They require constant tuning, and are prone to just not working properly, requiring the rest of the team to improvise and cover up while the broken machine is mended real time on stage.

All the songs in Oxygene have 8 tracks, so Jarre + 3 other people (ie 8 hands, 1 for each track) came on stage to play the album. Each musician was surrounded by at least 8 different machines/keyboards (there's a list in the programme I bought, most are MOOGs). After a brief hello + intro, Jarre and co get to work tuning their machines and then kicking off the concert with Oxygene and 3 parts of a Variation to make things more interesting.

And by God were we in for a treat, and surprise! I was worried about this concert - watching just Jarre playing live without all the bells and whistles couldn't be as fun or entertaining, but I was wrong! With every note you can see someone's hand twisting a nob here or there, with every beat there's a person quickly moving from one keyboard to another, Jarre and co rarely had time to look at the audience - they were hunched over like mad scientists over their machines pushing this and pulling that and pressing this and twisting that while coming up with the beautiful music that is Oxygene.

Every now and then each musician would look at the other as if to confirm that all's ok and we can move to the next track, and when one of them is delayed tuning something or another, the others keep on playing to give him time. Remember, Oxygene is a gapless album, so the whole show was live AND gapless.

Midway through the concert, and nearer the signature Oxygene IV, a big mirror suddenly appeared and gave us a second view of Jarre's equipment. As if to prove to the world that he really can play live (the speculation and rumours regarding his large live concerts is that a lot of stuff is pre-recorded, but watching the concert yesterday I don't really blame him!), and perhaps to show us audience the amount of concentration and effort needed to keep the music coming. It was a fascinating thing to watch, and that's when I realised that anything other than basic lighting effects would have counter-acted the whole theme behind the show, the whole audience had to be watching Jarre and co playing live. Watching anything else just wouldn't cut it. Every now and then Jarre would get excited and jump up and down a bit, but looking at his hands carefully you see that they're stuck there on the knob he's twisting, caressing it maybe (he calls the machines Sexy Old Ladies!), never letting go or moving a millimetre, despite the rest of his body jumping up and down!

There's a certain wow-factor to watching big screens and lasers and even choreographed fireworks. You wonder at the setup time, the effort and technique to get it all right, and the technical marvel of it all. Watching 4 people playing some very very old analogue machines live, programming sequences on the fly, tuning and fine-tuning to get the sound just right, and seeing their concentrating and concerned faces as they move from one machine to the other (perhaps hoping that the one they left is still ok, and the one their going to will behave), is a lot more satisfying than the big technical shows.

Jarre finished the concert with Oxygene 12 as a bonus, then came back to encore Oxygene 13 (seems to be his favourite encore, he did the same in Gdansk). The standing ovation the man received was proof that if anything, his music is just as relevant now as it was was 30 years ago.

Unfortunately, nothing broke down or messed up drastically in the concert :) The only little bit of excitement was when one technician quickly ran on stage to close something Jarre had left open. God knows what.

We left the show mesmerised and happy. The merchandise store had a lot to offer (Gdansk only had a lanyard and a t-shirt), so I battled the crowds and bought a t-shirt, a long-sleeve top, a cap, and a mug. Sorted.

Ali Alsawaf MRCP

I did it! I finally did it! After so many damn attempts, I finally cracked the madness that is PACES (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills), the 3rd and final exam for The Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP)!

Damn was it scary, and damn was it tough! My exam was in one of the biggest damn hospitals in London, Guy's and St Thomas' so I was shitting bricks!

But thank God everything went OK and I found out the results today online!!!

Great timing just before I go off to London I can celebrate and be happy there and watching Jarre live with such great news is gonna make me feel top of the world!!!

To celebrate? A HUGGGEE computer upgrade. Stay tuned ;)

Mid-Bloody-April, that's when!

Damn you Valve! Goldrush map, the first sporting the new game mode "payload", and the medic changes for TF2 are due mid next month. Week of April 20th to be exact!

Joystiq has the details here.

Valve really don't know how to stick to timelines! They even poke fun at their ownselves on their developer's site, having a whole page explaining "Valve Time"

See you after the weekend peeps!

We're having a long weekend on Friday. I've taken Friday and Monday off, and Kelly is already off for a couple of weeks.

On Friday we're off to London, nothing planned for Friday but might do some shopping and stuff at Oxford Street. I really wanna go to Hamley's and the awesomeness that is Forbidden Planet.

Saturday will see the hardcore (Kelly-style) shopping, I'm hoping to spend the majority of it at the other awesomeness that is The London Trocadero (not as good as it used to be ages ago, but still a great arcade!). In the evening we're going to see Les Miserables which I've heard so many people rave about I'm hoping it's good.

Sunday we'll go take my mum out for a Chinese, but it'll also be the day we see Jean-Michel Jarre playing Oxygene live at The Royal Albert Hall. I am so looking forward to this, it would be the second time I see the man and hopefully not the last! Oxygene will be played entirely live by Jarre + 3 others, using the original equipment he used to create the record back in 77! It's amazing to think that the album is 30 years old, and remains an amazing and influential record.
CAN'T WAIT!

Monday we might go to The Natural History Museum, and then back to Ipswich.

So, a long, action-packed, and hopefully really fun weekend! See you after the break ;)

SoB's Kitchen Returns!!

Quick post: Am typing this from London. I've reinstated broadband there, which theoretically is 24mbit down/2mbit up. Currently I'm getting 16mbit down/1 mbit up. I doubt the down speed is gonna change (old phone line) but the upload is meant to double over the next few days (as per the ISP who says so).

The PC in the kitchen is upgraded a bit over the older one, being a P4 3.0 with 2gb RAM and 160gb hard drive, most of which is empty. It's currently running a COD4 server (that EVERYONE can use ;)), Quake 3, and FEAR even! All these need proper configuration later.

There's also a 12 person Team Speak server for our voicing pleasure ;)

There's also an FTP server for everyone to use which is limited at 256kbit up (so that it doesn't affect the game servers) but it's open for all to use in case you need a temporary store to chuck things in. I might even put an http server on it for easier access if someone teaches me how to ;)

I'll email the IP and passwords and more details to everyone later (guess what the passwords are :p) and I hope this will solve some of the ping problems we have when we play privately.

Emails later.

Wall*E

The final trailer (and Vacuum Vignette :p) for Wall*E is out in glorious HD on the Apple Trailers site.

Wall*E is my most anticipated movie this year. If you haven't seen anything about Wall*E, I recommend watching Teaser 2 then the full trailer.

Work

I worked all weekend.

Yesterday was hell. Today was hell-ish.

Just thought I'd share it with the world.

Tiredness...

...is my main issue these days. Sleeping early (for me, 23:00) and waking 08:00 still isn't helping.
No idea why though, there's nothing that should make me tired as work is ok these days. Working all damn weekend though, so perhaps I'm tired in anticipation?

In other news, we joined the gym (I say gym, it's more of a club with a gym, pools, bar/restaurant, tennis courts, squash, spa etc etc) today. We need to "tone up" before the wedding (May).

Haven't been doing much PC gaming lately at all. Not sure why, I miss good old TF2, COD4 and Quake Wars. I'm waiting for my new mouse pad which should arrive soon. That'll definitely make me play more on the PC. Other gaming has been ok-ish with Zack and Wiki on the Wii (stopped that during exams) and Bully on 360.

Oh and what I am doing a lot is reading books! Harry Potter to be precise, am reading book 2 now and loving it all!

Thanks for reading :p

The genius of Rez

Ah Rez. The main reason I really really regret selling my Dreamcast all those years ago. A game like no other, it's an experience, a journey, and an amazing feat. Let me divulge:

Rez was a game released for the Sega Dreamcast more or less near it's very premature death. It was created by the talent that is Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the same man behind the excellent Lumines (originally for PSP). Recently, and luckily for me, Rez was rereleased via Xbox Live as an Arcade game for the 360, called Rez HD. This featured widescreen HD graphics and a 5.1 mix to the awesome sound track. I think my heart did a somersault the day I downloaded it!

See, every now and then I remembered Rez on the Dreamcast, and I kicked myself for selling it. I tried to emulate it on the PC, but it sucked. I nearly bought an old Dreamcast just to replay what, to me, is one of gaming's most influential games. When the 360 version was announced, and eventually released after endless delays, I knew that my lucky star was shining!

Rez is a rail shooter. Before you stumble away, it's a one-of-a-kind rail shooter. Inspired by abstract Russian artists and a track of the same name by electronic brits Underworld, you play inside 5 levels of an AI gone mad, shooting your way through bugs in the AI to cleanse it from the madness it's going through.

But that's just the excuse the game needs for it's main value: the music. Every level has it's own trance track, which starts off rather basic, with one or two instruments/layers heard. Everything you do, from shooting, to locking on to enemies, even powering up is musical too, adding to the overall track. As you progress through the level, the music gets more and more complex, with more tracks coming in and more layers added. By around the half way mark you'll suddenly realise that you're listening to something way different to what you started with, but the transition was effortless, and masterly executed.

The graphics are abstract to say the least, wireframes, Egyptian (and even Sumerian) symbols, euphemisms, and lots of trippy colours, the do nothing more than make the music sound even sweeter, and transfix you even further in the trance-like state you're in when playing.
Even the obligatory bosses at the end of each level are amazingly designed, all of which have their climatic music track and all of which are named after planets. The first level's boss for example is called Earth, and each layer you shoot away from it causes it to scream in a singing/hurting kind of way, again making the music even better.

The game also uses force feedback to great effect. Your main controller throbs to the base/drums, while you can also activate your other spare controllers to act as "Trance Vibrators" that are synced with other instruments/frequencies. This might sound gimmicky, but as Rez does a great job at absorbing you inside it's world, the vibrations add that little extra to break the man-machine barrier.

I have played Rez a lot. I will play Rez a lot more. I can fire it up any time I feel bored because it is endlessly entertaining. I'm currently trying to complete it's 5 "areas" with 100%, and I've done the first 2 areas, unlocking bonuses galore. I'm the last person to replay any game, even more so if the game offers bonuses and unlocks cos I just can't be bothered. But with Rez it's not replaying, it's re-experiencing.

Those of you with 360s should download this straight away, those with a PC can get close by trying Lumines at wildgames.com. Though different (falling blocks puzzle), Lumines has a different but equally absorbing musical twist, that has to be heard (through good headphones!) to be believed.

So I decide to play Psychonauts...

...and it crashes. and I get this window when I terminate it in the task manager.

How cool? Even when it crashes, Psychonauts is a great game. Most Excellent to be precise :D

Sleep

I needed to sleep last night. I tried, I really did, to stay up and play a bit. But I just couldn't.
This weekend is the VERY FIRST since November where I have got NOTHING to do or worry about.
For the last 3 months, I have spent every weekend doing one of these:
1\ Revising at home
2\ Meeting up with a friend in the hospital to practice and revise for 3-4 hours each weekend day
3\ Being on-call/nights working
4\ Worrying about my dad

This week just gone was very stressful: driving up to London, exam on Tuesday (practical), doing some official stuff with mum Wednesday, driving back late Wednesday (see Owls below :p) and being on-call till 22:00 Thursday. Stupidly staying up till 02:30am after being on-call, and working all Friday. MAN........

But at least yesterday was the first Friday where I didn't have any of the 4 points above. I came back from work, we went out to the cinema (Vantage Point - good film) and food (Nando's - good chicken) and got back home about 22:00. I went on Steam at 22:30 or so and played a bit of TF2 till 23:00, but I just couldn't stay awake. I was exhausted.

Went to bed - woke up at 09:00 and I feel great! Nothing to do at all this weekend, no plans or shit. Just me, the machines, and lots of gaming/coffee!! Kelly's sister is here with us so they're keeping each other company :)

It's funny - I don't know what to do now. I keep wanting to revise or practice or do some bookwork, but I don't need to. I'm not sure how I spent my free time before exams. Honestly.
I guess reading a fictional book will help me "transition". I'm reading the first Harry Potter (great bookset gift from Mrs SoB) so I'll do that for a while until I get the games-spark back up and running.

See you in there :)

Owls

I've discovered something. Found it out actually. I like driving at night.

I don't usually like driving, it's not something I enjoy nor look forward too. To me, driving is a basic thing that has to be done, like brushing your teeth. I don't like going out "for a drive", and I am definitely not a petrol-head.

But tonight, as I was driving back from London, I realised that I was actually enjoying myself. As I was driving out of the city on to the motorways, I was watching the road twist and turn in front of my eyes, all bathed in the light of a thousand street lamps, and with only a few more drivers on the road, everything looked just right. Beautiful even.

Which made me think. Whenever I can, I plan to drive at night. For as far back as I can remember, each time I've needed to drive from A to B, I've done it at night. Even if I wasn't busy and could've left earlier, I don't. I wait until it's dark.

There is something very surreal about driving at night. The empty roads, the lights, the parked lorries sleeping overnight, the lorries that are driving overnight, the hum of your car driving solo down a long motorway, the thoughts you think about, and the trance-like state you enter when everything is in complete harmony and you're not just driving anymore, you're at one with your car.

This, of course, has to be done solo. Not even the quietest, most unnoticeable person or thing must be in the car with you. That'll just break the flow of things. Music should be off, or kept to a bare minimum of ambient vocal-free music otherwise it'll just distract you. Want the ultimate experience? Put this on and watch as you, the car, the road, and the music all merge in to one euphoric state. And of course, you have to be on a motorway, or any long long road to wherever.

Ironically, I used to moan and moan at my uncle for driving late at night on motorways. I always thought he was mad, leaving at some unholy hour of the night. May be we're both mad, or may be we're owls. Who knows.

I do know one thing - never ever ask me to travel early in the morning. Ever.

TEST

Try your luck at this crafty little puzzle (from the get-everybody-across-the-river variety, commonly in Iraq: Wolf-Sheep-Shepherd :))
Here's the rules:

Only 2 persons on the raft at a time.

The father cannot stay with any of the daughters, without their mother’s presence.

The mother cannot stay with any of the sons, without their father’s presence.

The thief (striped shirt) cannot stay with any family member, if the Policeman is not there.

Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate the raft.

GOOD LUCK!

Blog change

A quickie: The "TF2 Snap of the Week" that was on your right has been renamed to "MP Snap of the Week". This is because of the fact that we have a lot more games than just TF2 that we should be playing, but the reality is we're still just playing TF2 :D

So, just in case we manage to fire up the odd COD4 or Enemy Territory, then I can put a snap up on the blog.

My dad is out!

Confirmed, verified, I spoke to my aunt and his wife (can't talk to him till tomorrow cos he's with his sister who's phone is broken). He got "released" today, and according to his wife he is "a bit dizzy cos he was put in a car boot for a while". Can you imagine?

They promise me he's well, and I'm going to talk to him (hopefully video chat) tomorrow morning!

Thanks to everyone who got in touch. I can't explain how fucking stressful all this shit was.

Jigjig Friday :p ?

Fear...

WARNING: minor Call of Duty 4 spoiler. Look away now if you don't want to know!

....in a game has been around for a while now. From the Grand Daddy, Alone in the Dark, to recent moderns like Condemned and F.E.A.R. itself, we've been jumping out of our seats quite a bit.

Of course, fear in a game can be different things: Resident Evil scares you by making things suddenly jump out at you, F.E.A.R. used flashbacks, and weird happenings with a scary girl to freak you out, and the recent Condemned used a mix of nothing happening (which is really scary cos you start anticipating things that don't happen!) and of visceral, gory, combat with homeless people that like beating the crap out of you. It also featured one of the most pant-wetting cut scenes I've ever seen, involving a corpse and a camera "shiver"...

But yesterday I experienced something different, something that I don't remember experiencing at all, and it was such a fresh experience I was left amazed. I'm talking about Call of Duty 4, particularly the "All Ghillied Up" level that occurs in Prypiat, Ukraine.
You play an SAS Lieutenant called Price (Thanks Anmar for the correction!) who in this level couples up with an awesome sniper called Captain MacMillan. You are told to follow MacMillan's every move, and do EXACTLY as you're told. And by God do you do that...

The level has you crawling and sliding in tall fauna as you try to sneak past various Russian soldiers, taking the odd one out now and then. MacMillan doesn't pretend to be nice, he just tells you what to do and when to do it. "GET DOWN NOW!", "GO GO", "TAKE THAT SOLDIER OUT NOW", "ARE YOU DAFT?!!" when you make a mistake. And when that happens, there is no way you can survive the onslaught of soldiers and dogs that come your way, so you have no choice other than to restart.
Which makes you realise that you have to do what MacMillan says. EXACTLY as he says. Don't deviate, don't try to do your own thing. This is one level where the computer is in charge, and it knows it. Mess around and you're dead meat. Follow the orders and you might make it. And I say might because there are moments of sheer FEAR in this level. At one stage you're lied flat with your face in the mud watching a patrol of soldiers and tanks walk straight past you. MacMillan warns you that any move you do might alert them, and that you should try to predict their paths so you get out of the way early.

This last for about one minute, and for that one minute you are glued in your seat. You daren't breathe, you daren't even move your real body because they might just hear you. Staring at the grass and at MacMillan's camouflaged body you suddenly realise that you're playing one heck of a game. And you're scared. Very scared that something might tip them off or that they'll realise you're there.
By the time this is all over you take a deep breath, have a glass of water, and carry on what turns out to be an amazing level, actually one of the best FPS levels I've played for some time (including the awesome Episode 2 Finale).

And this is a new kind of fear. One where your controls are dictated by the computer, where every move might be fatal, and where, even though you have complete control over your character, you don't really because to stay alive you have to follow orders from another character. And he's a very convincing one at that - all camouflaged and using the hand signs that we've seen army people do in movies, you can't help but have utmost respect and admiration for MacMillan and his survival skills. I'm sure those of you that have played that level will agree...

"Patience. Don't do anything stupid"

I hate...

Here's one especially for you Anmar: your comment about hating the blue dragon below reminded me of someone. Someone I think you should use as your avatar for everything, not least your spray image in TF2.

Introducing: Grouchy Smurf!

As you know (and probably hate), Grouchy hates everything too, and is a self-confessed cynic and hater-of-everything as well!

I hope you see the funny side of this, and not hate me too much :p

Here's hoping your net connection gets fixed soon....

Dragon Optical Illusion

This is cool, and you can make it yourself!
Have a look at this video of a dragon me and Kelly made today:

The dragon moves his head and neck to follow the camera! Of course, the reality is that he's fixed (actually made out of paper) and does nothing at all :)

The reason this happens is because the dragon's face is actually concave, and our brains assume he's convex (like normal) so correct his face to whichever way we look.

The best way to understand this illusion is to make it yourself! Head over to the excellent www.grand-illusions.com and download the free .pdf of the dragon from there. Print him out, cut him out, and fold him as instructed and see for yourselves!

Still Alive on an Intel 8080

Possibly the geekiest cover version of the geekiest (and best) song ever made for a game, here's an Intel 8080 terminal rendition of the classic.

Quote:
"Everything on the terminals and sound is controlled by an Intel 8080 Microprocessor at 2MHz. The sound chip is a MOS SID (From a Commodore 64)."

Oh and the original MP4, MP3 and SOURCE CODE are available here.

Enjoy. SoB - about to start night 3 of 4 of 7.

Zack and Wiki on Nights

1\ Play Zack and Wiki. It's like a point and click adventure/puzzle/clever/cute/awesome/logical game that will have you jumping up and down when you finally solve that head scratching conundrum. It's a Wii only game by Capcom, and it's great. So great, in fact, that IGN have a "Buy Zack and Wiki" campaign!!

2\ I'm on nights tonight. The usual 4 then 7 days off, then 3. SUCKS.

3\ I'm still waiting to get something from PCZone, hopefully Call of Duty 4. If I don't have it by next week (Wednesday), I'll buy it and if they send me a copy I'll eBay the damn thing.

Team Fortress 2 changes now detailed!!!

Valve let rip a few weeks ago that changes are a-coming to our beloved TF2, but not much else was said.
Today, the official PCGAMER blog details the changes, and BY GOD are we in for a surprise!

First of all, the new maps shipping next month are Badlands and Goldrush. Both of which focus around a new game type (unnamed as yet) which sounds like great fun: BLU have to "escort" a mining cart from their base to the RED base. The cart moves faster the more BLU players there are next to it, BUT stands still if there's a single RED player nearby :) Allegedly this is fantastic fun because the fight is constantly changing due to varying choke points along the track. The engineers are gonna have a great time on this one :D

More importantly though is the big class changes on the way. Valve will start experimenting with a COD4-like system using the Medic to start off with: He will get 35 new achievements, if he gets half of them he unlocks a new gun!! This can be kitted out in a "Load Out" screen that is rumoured to be enabled BEFORE the game (as opposed to in-game), and is called an "Overhealer". It lets the medic buff a patient to 200% of their health PERMANENTLY. Valve are going to either severely cripple it's Ubercharging or remove it entirely.
The medic can carry either this gun or his old ubergun, but not both.

As you can see this will add some great tactical/fun changes to the game! There's also a 2nd new medicgun that hasn't been detailed yet, but the medic can get that when he's gotten all 35 achievements (allegedly it changes the WAY his patients play!). It's all very COD4-like.

These changes should be coming in 2 months or so, and will start on a very limited Medic-only basis. Any more class changes will be implemnted slowly following feedback from the medic thing, and also following player suggestions as Valve wants to hear from the community about all this, which is what makes TF2 so awesome!!!

More exciting details here. I bet everyone would wanna play medic in a few months time! Go away you bastards, they should limit these changes to people who played medic from day one *cough* me *cough*

Team Battlefield Fortress Heroes 2

EA today announced Battlefield Heroes, a "Play 4 Free" game released this summer!

Supporting itself by Microtransactions and in-game adverts (sigh), the official blurb goes:

Battlefield Heroes™ is a brand new Play 4 Free™ game from the people that brought you the multi-million selling Battlefield 1942™ and Battlefield 2™

It's a fun cartoon-style shooter which caters to players of all skill levels – easy to pick up and play, but with deep character development

It will be released for the PC as a free download in Summer 2008

Sound familiar? Can anyone think of a game recently that's a "fun cartoon-style shooter" and that's "easy to pick up"?

No? doesn't ring a bell? How about the only screenshot released of the game. Does it look like anything you've seen or played before :p?

Of course, EA are "cashing in" on Team Fortress 2s success and dominance. Whether they'll pull it off is yet to be seen. Still though, it is free so we can't moan.

Games for Windows has a world exclusive in their March issue (Out next month). Till then, we'll play some more TF2.

Jarre comes to London!

YES! YES!

On Sunday the 30th of March 2008, Jarre will be performing Oxygene live at The Royal Albert Hall, London!!

This one off show is part of his Oxygene 30th Anniversary tour, for which Jarre has been playing the whole Oxygene album live using the original 50+ synthesisers he used 30 years ago :)

I'm really glad he's performing here, I nearly bought tickets to go and see this show in Paris, but then changed my mind last minute. Now that he's doing London I'll definitely be getting some tickets hopefully!!

Can't wait!!

Because we had SO MUCH fun...

...yesterday, I thought I'd add a new feature to the blog.

Those of you involved in yesterday's jigjig will vouch at how awesome the whole thing was. From the long-awaited presence of a 4th player (Fuj!), to the moment he realised he was playing with three VERY ADDICTED team mates!

Yesterday we also finally managed to break the Granary Curse, in that we won it for once! We always lose that level no matter what happens, or how well we try to play. We once lost it 13-0!!
Anyhow, we played for ages and had great fun rotating through all six of the TF2 maps.

The highlight of the night(morning) was when Blue Blood demonstrated his uncanny ability at playing "The Price is Right": Fuj! had told me before that he'd bought a new monitor. Yesterday, he asked me to guess how much he paid for it. Now, I can't even remember it's specs, let alone guess how much it cost. But, Blue Blood, with his psychic powers instantly said $200. Fuj! thought about it a bit, and eventually worked out that he had indeed paid $200! The amazing feat was that Blue Blood didn't know anything about the monitor, it's specs, nothing. And more amazingly the original price was $299 but Fuj! got a discount, so Blue Blood nailed it on the head with his first prediction!
He later admitted to being this all-predicting money guru who can predict the price of everything to a margin of +/- $5.

We, of course, made use of this ability and asked him to predict all sorts of prices, ranging from "How much will my new laptop cost" to "What's the pressure in my rear left car tyre!" (nothing to do with money but it was late and we were laughing so much nothing made sense any more!); the most sensible being PyroMax's "How much will Left4Dead cost when it's out on Steam?".

So, back to the new feature thingie: As you all know TF2 is cartoon-perfect. I've taken lots of various snaps (Killcams and others) while playing, so from now on every week there will be a new snap in the side bar on the right. Clicking on it gives you the nice big version. I'll update it every Saturday (Post-jigjig).
The first snap is of a bunch of Pyros on Dustbowl Stage 2, doing what I think is a Victory Chant, before all hell breaks loose :)

As always, keep on playing people - it keeps us young, and sane.

PS: Nile, we miss you......

Has anyone noticed

That the music from the "Hayabusa Village" level in Ninja Gaiden is very very similar to some of the music from the golden oldie, Shadow Of The Beast II?

I'm finally getting to play Ninja Gaiden, specifically the Sigma variety which is the PS3 super-dooper-HD-1080p-etc-etc edition. I played it a bit in it's original Xbox flavour but never got far in it (it was too difficult. YES I know...)

Which reminds me, someone HAS TO remake that game. Or preferably, remake all 3 of them, particularly the 3rd which was shorter, but a lot easier to play. Still, Beast II remains one of my most memorable games of childhood, mainly because I didn't own an Amiga and when I first saw it, I thought that video games were looking so real it was never going to get better....

As if by magic....

Here's something cool: below is a magic sentence. Copy and paste the whole sentence anywhere you like (try leaving a comment with it for example); and, as if by magic, anything you type will go right to left!
‫‫‬‭‮‪‫‬‭‮҉
Amazing isn't it! (or just a special Unicode Character to control bidirectional typing)
